Emigrate to Paraguay

The Cordillera

A popular destination for Europeans

The decision has been made and now what?
You've decided to emigrate to Paraguay. Why not? This fascinating country offers so many advantages that it's hard to resist. The quality of life here is high, and at a fraction of the cost you might be used to in your home country. Imagine living in a country where daily expenses are significantly lower, yet you can still lead a comfortable life. The economic opportunities in Paraguay are diverse. Whether you want to invest in agriculture, livestock farming, or other industries, the possibilities are endless. Many expats see Paraguay as a new perspective and a chance to gain a foothold in a less saturated market. In addition, the immigration process in Paraguay is relatively straightforward. Compared to many other countries where bureaucracy and lengthy procedures are the norm, Paraguay makes it easy for expats to settle down. The tax advantages complete the attractive overall picture. Low tax rates and a simple tax system also make Paraguay a worthwhile destination financially.

Which part of Paraguay suits you?

But the big question remains: Which part of Paraguay should you settle in? Do you love the vibrant life of a big city with all its amenities and the anonymous charm of a metropolitan area like Asunción? Or are you more drawn to exclusive San Bernardino, where Paraguay's rich and famous spend their free time? Perhaps you are drawn to the remote German communities in the Chaco, where you can live a secluded life among like-minded people. Or is the Cordillera, with its picturesque towns, right for you? This region offers numerous advantages thanks to its proximity to the capital and its friendly community. In this article, we take a closer look at this area and explain why the Cordillera in particular attracts so many Germans.

Only advantages for immigrants and locals?

The Cordillera region is located in central Paraguay, an area extremely popular with both locals and European expats. This region boasts picturesque landscapes that invite exploration. Here, you'll find small waterfalls, mountains for hiking, and extensive forests that are still largely untouched and offer wonderful natural beauty. The Cordillera includes several charming towns and villages, including well-known places like Caacupé, Emboscada, and Tobatí. A major advantage of the Cordillera is its proximity to the capital, Asunción. Depending on which part of the Cordillera you are in, you can reach the capital in approximately 45 to 90 minutes. By Paraguayan standards, where long distances are often involved, this is a short and convenient journey. This proximity allows Cordillera residents to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of rural life without having to forgo the amenities and services of a big city.

Security

The Cordillera is considered one of the safest regions in Paraguay. Although burglaries can occur here, they are rarer and less frequent than in the capital, Asunción. The crime rate in the Cordillera is comparatively significantly lower, making the region particularly attractive for families and older people seeking a safe and peaceful environment. Another advantage of the Cordillera is the close-knit community of its residents. In the countryside, people know each other, which helps them quickly recognize strangers and quickly locate potential robbers. This sense of community stands in stark contrast to the anonymity of a big city. The people in the Cordillera look out for and support one another, which creates a heightened sense of security. It is well known that Paraguay struggles with poverty in parts, especially in parts of the capital, which can lead to a feeling of injustice there. This is less common in the countryside. If you choose a standard, well-equipped house built to German standards, you might be a little envied, but the friendly nature of Germans and their popularity in Paraguay play a major role. Germans are often perceived as positive, reliable people who contribute to the community and create jobs. This positive image contributes to the fact that the risk of being robbed is much lower than in the city. Additionally, there are charming barrios in the Cordillera that offer a particularly high level of security. Imagine living in a well-maintained residential complex that is fenced in and has guarded gates. These barrios are small communities of like-minded Germans and Europeans who stick together and support one another. The modern security systems and regular contact with the local police ensure that you can feel completely safe. These neighborhoods not only offer protection but also a strong sense of community that makes life in the Cordillera even more enjoyable.

Strong communities
with self-sufficiency in mind

The Cordillera region is characterized by a strong expat community, including many Germans. These communities offer support and facilitate integration. This helps you quickly find connections and feel at home in your new surroundings.

The Cordillera is known for its vast expanse of land, which potentially offers good conditions for agriculture and horticulture. Many Germans who emigrate to Paraguay love the idea of leading a self-sufficient and independent life. The desire to grow their own fruit and vegetables, keep chickens, and live independently of external energy sources attracts many people. Although conditions are not always ideal—the heat can be challenging and the soil often requires preparation—the Cordillera nevertheless offers numerous opportunities for aspiring self-sufficient farmers. Many expats who have lived in the region for some time have developed strategies to successfully grow vegetables despite the hot climate. The constant sunshine is a great advantage for plant growth, and there are numerous initiatives and community projects among German communities that promote the exchange of experience and support. For example, fruit trees are often planted communally, techniques for improving soil quality are shared, and other workshops are held. In addition to farming, many work on projects for independent water supply and electricity generation. This includes the construction of wells, the use of rainwater and the installation of solar and electricity storage systems.
The so-called potluck is a tradition in our barrio. Everyone brings something to share a meal once a month.

Low cost of living

As in many parts of Paraguay, the cost of living in the Cordillera is low. This allows expats to live comfortably without incurring high expenses. Low housing costs, affordable food, and services make the region particularly attractive to retirees and families. However, expats who desire German standards should be aware that this sometimes entails higher costs, especially in cities like San Bernardino and Asunción. The low cost of living often goes hand in hand with lower standards, especially in terms of construction quality. Thin, poorly insulated walls, inadequately installed pipes, and substandard materials are not uncommon. To avoid these problems, it is important to find trustworthy contractors. Working closely with experienced Paraguayan contractors or, ideally, German contractors who combine local offerings with German expertise can significantly improve construction quality. These contractors can guide the Paraguayan construction workers and ensure that the work meets the desired standards.

How do I recognize a good building contractor?

Here are some tips on how to recognize a trustworthy contractor:

  1. Positive reports from other Germans: The experiences of other expats can provide valuable insights. A contractor with a lot of positive feedback is often a good choice.
  2. Reliability and communication: A good contractor adheres to agreed deadlines and communicates regularly in an understandable and professional manner.
  3. Transparency and references: A contractor who is willing to show you previous construction projects and provide detailed information about his work shows openness and confidence in his quality.
  4. Price and qualityA very low price can often be a sign of poor quality materials and workmanship. It's important to strike a balance between cost and quality.
  5. Interest in long-term relationships: A good contractor will be interested in building a long-term relationship and will make every effort to ensure that you are satisfied with the work.

By following these points, you can ensure that your construction project in the Cordillera is successful and meets your standards is implemented.

Does a gated community make sense? We think so!

Imagine entering a charming barrio on a sunny afternoon. The warm sun filters through the tree leaves, casting golden rays of light onto the well-kept sidewalks. Children laugh and play, while neighbors greet each other warmly in the common areas and exchange fresh fruit and vegetables. In this environment, you immediately feel welcome and safe. A barrio offers a special form of security and safety. Guarded entrances and fences, surveillance systems, and regular security checks, especially in the evenings, ensure that residents feel safe. Here, everyone knows everyone, and strangers are quickly recognized. This close-knit community ensures that potential threats are quickly identified and that neighbors look out for one another. The community in the barrio is the heart of life there. At a communal barbecue, you get to know your neighbors better, exchange stories, and make new friends. Shared activities and events create an atmosphere in which you feel welcome and supported. Close-knit neighborhoods make it easier to build social networks and strengthen a sense of community, which can be especially important for expats. A well-organized barrio offers everything you need for a comfortable life. The streets are well-laid out, and the water and electricity supplies are reliable. Fast internet ensures you're always connected. After a long day, you can refresh yourself in the community pool, take a walk in the park, or work out on the sports field. Cleanliness and order are a given in the barrio. Well-maintained green spaces and regular garbage collection keep the area clean and tidy. Rules for maintaining order help ensure that the environment always remains pleasant and livable. Craftsmen and service providers are often available on-site, making it easier to solve everyday problems. Community projects and initiatives offer additional convenience and promote community spirit. All of these advantages make a barrio a special place where you can not only live, but truly live. The mix of security, community, and quality of life ensures that you feel comfortable and secure here.
